Truth, Love, and Obedience (2 John 1:4-6)
Is it just me or does this seem like a circular argument?
- Walking in the truth is what was commanded by the Father.
- The basic commandment is that we love one another.
- The way to love one another is to obey the commandment.
I'm not totally clear on this verse, and this is one of the times when I wish I knew Greek.
The "translation" in The Message actually seems to reconcile some of the circularity ( http://read.ly/2John1.4.MSG ). I wonder how accurate this is.
What it seems to come down to is this: love for one another and obedience to God's commands are intrinsically linked. There is almost no sense in even attempting to separate them from each other.
Walking in Truth = Loving Each Other = Obeying God's Commands
Is there any way in my life where I have separated these from each other? Do I claim to be loving others but walking in deception? Do I claim to be loving others but not obeying all of God's commands?
Father, help me to live a life of integrity, where my doctrine, my affections, and my actions all line up according to this verse.
